School Ventilation

To mitigate the spread of viruses like COVID-19, it’s essential for schools to have adequate ventilation. Many school buildings, especially those over 20 years old, lack proper ventilation, a concern not fully resolved even by new HVAC systems in modern schools. Integrating air purifiers in schools can be a crucial step in enhancing air quality and ensuring a safer environment for students and staff in these inadequately ventilated spaces.

When dealing with viruses and bacteria that is airborne, like Covid-19 (Coronavirus), Air Changes is extremely important, not only the change of air, but cleaning the air of viruses, bacteria, and germs, so they don’t spread through the HVAC ventilation system.

AllerAir Air Purifiers are manufactured to clean the air of airborne contaminants like Viruses and Bacteria, such as Covid-19. The AirMedic Pro series Air Purifiers scrub the air, hence the term ‘Air  Scrubber’, providing Air Changes per Hour (ACH).

Ventilation

Ventilation and Air Purification is Key to Battling Covid-19 In Schools

Adequate ventilation and having enough Air Changes per Hour (ACH) is key to fighting the Covid-19 virus.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) also known as high efficiency particulate arresting, is the most efficient filter available today to filter particles and Microorganisms. HEPA filter technology will filter particles and microorganisms to the size of 0.3 Micron.

Based on recommendations from the CDC, School classrooms should have between 3 to 6 ACH (Air Changes per Hour) in order to effectively clean the air of COVID-19 and other airborne viruses and bacteria. Having air purifiers in schools is of the utmost importance in combatting airborne viruses.

Note: Not all HEPA filters are the same. There is a huge difference between HEPA and True HEPA (Medical Grade HEPA). True HEPA has an efficiency rate of 99.97% down to 0.3 Micron.

AllerAir True HEPA Filtration Advantage

The AirMedic Pro 5 and Pro 6 series Air Purifiers feature a unique filter configuration, that is beneficial for indoor air quality, especially when dealing with Airborne viruses.

Some Air Purifiers on the market have a filter configuration in the following order.
1: Pre-Filter
2: HEPA Filter
3: Carbon Filter (Canister or rectangular Carbon Sprayed filter)

AllerAir Filter Configuration: As show on the diagram, is in the following order.
1: Pre-Filter
2: Carbon Filter (2.5″ thick or 3.0″ thick carbon canister)
3: Large Medical Grade HEPA Filter or Super HEPA filter

Filter Configuration is Key to Cleaning the Air of Airborne Contaminants

AllerAir Filtration

The advantage of AllerAir HEPA filter is a larger filter that is the last stage of filtration, which filters a larger surface area.

AllerAir’s experience with filtration, gives customers the advantage of using True HEPA filters to their fullest capacity.

On the AirMedic Pro 5 & Pro 6 series Air Purifiers, Air flows through the air cleaner in the following way.

Contaminated air is drawn through the bottom of the air purifier, then goes through the Pre-filter, then through the activated carbon filter, then through the Medical Grade True HEPA filter, then clean air is vented out through the top of the unit.

At AllerAir, we believe the HEPA filter should be the last stage of the filtration process. When it comes to battling Viruses & Bacteria like Covid-19, HEPA filter placement is the logical way to clean the air.

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) and Dwell Time

Air Purifiers should be strong enough to pull the air in a room through the filters, but not too strong where contaminated air doesn’t get filtered properly. This is where Dwell Time plays an important role in air purification. The longer the Dwell time, the better chance an Air Purifier has of effectively cleaning the air of viruses & bacteria.

The AirMedic Pro 5 and Pro 6 series air purifiers are 400 CFM and rated to filter a room between 1500 Sq Ft to 1800 Sq Ft, based on a ceiling height of 8′ giving a minimum of 2 ACH (Air Changes per Hour). The stronger the CFM, the less Dwell time the unit has to clean the air properly, also the higher the CFM, the louder the unit becomes.

With the average School Classroom between 500 Sq Ft and 1025 Sq Ft. The AirMedic Pro 5 Air Purifier (400 CFM) would provide 3-5 ACH (Air Changes per Hour).

AllerAir recommends air purifiers around 400 CFM for best optimal use. AllerAir does offer upgrades to 560 CFM or 735 CFM on the Pro 5 and Pro 6 series, but not recommended for a classroom environment, where noise levels would be an issue, and most importantly decreased Dwell time in the filters.

AllerAir UV Bulb

UV Option on Air Purifiers

On All AllerAir Air Purifiers we can add the UV bulb on the units. The UV light kills airborne Viruses & Bacteria, as well as germs and mold.

The UV-C light adds a 4th stage of air filtration.

An Air Purifier equipped with the UV bulb is effective at killing many airborne Germs, Viruses, and bacteria. Certain pathogens would require more time to eradicate, which the AirMedic Pro 5 and 6 series Air Purifiers are designed for.
